Orma began with sketches, and with access to the Letterform Archive, several original historical references. After extensive recent work in the sans serif arena, I knew I wanted to draft a serif typeface; and have been particularly drawn to wedge serif designs, as well as calligraphic faces.
As the concept for Orma developed, questions arose. Would it be possible to combine calligraphic and old-style typeface features with a wedge serif design? Wedge serif faces come from much later. Could this combination be modernized in to something usable and contemporary? And most importantly, do I have anything to say with this design, or add to the type world in general? I decided to attempt to find answers by making the typeface.
