waves weren’t good for the birthday session. head to overhead sloppy junk. tides and winds and everything seemed wrong, except the sunshine. soup dujour: wait on the outside for a crumbly mushbomb or sit inside and get slammed. I tried the former, got frustrated after hopping up and down on my board like a tard to try and generate some form of momentum… so then I gave the latter a shot. got maybe one or two rides. But the movie later and night out after more than made up for it. hung. over.

caught the premiere for the latest surf flick installment from Thomas Campbell at the Victoria Theater in the Mission, SF. The Present is an excellent film, and seeing a movie like this is an excellent time. we just don’t have surf movie showings like this back east. long line around the corner, beer in paper bags. twelver of tecate and rowdy in the balcony with a fun crew. good band playing before the showing, the Mattson 2. hoots and hollers and whistles for all the good parts. but now I know why they don’t serve beer in movie theaters! I had to piss like mad, but didn’t want to miss any of the truly class footage. beautiful stuff. incredible segment riding ancient, finless Alai surf board riding… including sessions at Sunset and Waimea Bay.

another late dash down to the Lane, Ocean Beach all blown out again. Molly, Mike and the dogs cruised by as I parked… actually felt like I knew someone! pull up, some nice sets rolling through, chest to head high and clean. some inconsistent middle peaks that swung wide, but mostly over at the slot.
not a bad session. crowds to deal with of course, but they thinned as the sun dipped below the cliff. new suit working nicely. some fire juggler folks at the lighthouse after dusk. apparently all the old tacquerias at the end of Mission street on the way out of town are all closed. spent $20 on health food stuff at that crunchy grocery store and was still hungry.

At Ogilvy in San Francisco, we recently launched a website for ZillionTV, a new streaming TV service. ZillionTV has been getting tons of press since the announcement on March 4th. This is our version one site to support ZillionTV’s announcement to the public, and provide information for an important industry conference in Cannes this month. Our developer got some nice particle effects happening in Papervision for this launch, but we have some pretty neat interactivity in prototype for version two of the site, once we have access to all the content that will be available…
Anyway, the service itself is a promising bid for true streaming TV, read about it at Wired, in the New York Times, or on Gizmodo.
Check out the site here.

there is nothing like a new wetsuit. the suffering is over. warm again! surfed near Noriega, and it was a bit onshore and shorter period stuff, about waist to chest high, but still dumping on the inner bar. warmer and sunny, it’s nice to have it back. snapped some film with the new (old) Argus C3. we’ll see how that develops, if you get my meaning. STILL sick from something, after talking to some folks, I’m thinking it’s a possibility I caught something from the water during the rains, while surfing at Pacifica. might be time for a doctor’s visit.
Mike Shine’s Surf Shack

We checked out an opening for artist / ad guy Mike Shine (of Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners) at the Yerba Buena Folk Art center last night. Pretty cool, he recreated his Bolinas surf shack inside the gallery. His art is a mashup of old mexican movie posters, norse art, and beaux arts re-revival… if that makes any sense. See Unnecessary Umlaut for more pics. Take a peek at Shine’s own site, too.

We caught Mister Ward live at the Palace of Fine Arts. He was there supporting his new album, which is solid and consistent with his other stuff. Great show. He’s a better guitarist than he gets credit for, and damn good at piano too. Also, the sound engineering in this hall was nearly perfect, up there with the best I have ever seen…err, heard. It was like sitting in front of a high quality stereo. And the window projection up there in the right was fun, it changed subtly with the mood of the songs. My favorite was the sunset that moved into dusk with fireflies flitting about… this accompanying a solo song with mellow acoustic slide, heavy on the reverb. Nice work. Check out his official site for tour dates, and catch him if he comes to town.
